Drug interaction: An interaction means that drugs can influence each other's effects and/or side effects when used at the same time.
St. John's wort can adversely affect the effectiveness of certain medications. St. John's wort enhances the activity of the liver enzyme cytochrome P450, which causes some medications to be broken down more quickly and therefore less effective.
If you are taking a medicine in combination with a product containing St. John's wort, you are advised to contact your doctor or pharmacist, who can provide further information on whether the combination could lead to such an interaction. This applies both if you want to start taking St. John's wort and if you want to stop taking St. John's wort simultaneously with one of the medicines listed below.
St. John's wort can affect the effect of anticoagulants.
St. John's wort may also interact with SSRI antidepressants. Concurrent use is not recommended.
Contraceptive pill: Breakthrough bleeding has been observed in isolated cases when St. John's wort is used simultaneously with certain types of the contraceptive pill (the combination of ethinylestradiol and desogestrel, also known as sub-50).
