Vitals Vitamin B12 1000 mcg consists of lozenges containing the biologically active form methylcobalamin. This is one of the forms of vitamin B12 found in food and used by the body. Many other vitamin B12 products use cyanocobalamin, a synthetic form that does not occur naturally. The advantage of a supplement in the biologically active form is that the vitamin B12 is immediately available to the body and does not need to be converted.
Functions of vitamin B12
Vitamin B12, in the form of methylcobalamin, is required for 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF, the biologically active form of folate) to convert homocysteine into methionine (vitamin B6 is also involved in this process). High homocysteine levels are undesirable.
Sometimes vitamin B12 is not absorbed well in certain people. In such situations, supplementing the diet with a high-dose B12 supplement (1000-2000 mcg) can provide relief.
