Vitals SAMe 200mgApproximately five hundred amino acids occur in nature. Twenty of these are amino acids that serve as building blocks for proteins in the human body; these are referred to as 'fundamental amino acids'. These fundamental amino acids can be further subdivided into the categories 'essential', 'semi-essential', and 'non-essential'. Methionine belongs to the so-called essential amino acids, which means that the body cannot produce it itself from other amino acids, and that to meet daily needs, one is completely dependent on diet. Methionine that is not incorporated into proteins by the body can be converted into S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) by reaction with ATP. This primarily occurs in the liver. SAMe is a methyl donor used in various methylation reactions in the body.
Methionine in the form of SAMe has the advantage that it does not first need to be converted, but is directly available to the body.
