Vitals Quercetin-PS Quercetin is one of the most important and best-researched bioflavonoids. It occurs naturally in various foods, including apples, berries, cabbage, and onions. Quercetin belongs to the flavonol subgroup, which protect plants against damage from insects and microorganisms, among other things. In food, quercetin is present in the glycoside form (bound to a sugar). Quercetin is partially lost through storage at high temperatures, cooking, or peeling. A dietary supplement containing quercetin can therefore be useful to increase daily intake. Like other bioflavonoids, quercetin is known to be very poorly absorbed by the body due to its low solubility in water (and therefore in aqueous digestive fluids). Research shows that quercetin in a homogeneous mixture with phosphatidylcholine (in so-called phytosomal form) has up to 20 times better absorption and bioavailability than pure quercetin.
Improved absorption through Phytosome® technology
Quercetin-PS contains quercetin from a natural source. It is extracted from the flowers of the honey plant (Sophora japonica). The absorption and bioavailability of quercetin in Quercetin-PS have been significantly improved by applying the patented Phytosome® technology from the Italian manufacturer Indena. The term Phytosome (or phytosome) comes from the Greek words phuton (plant) and soma (body). During the patented production process, the natural aggregation of specific, poorly absorbable phytonutrients (such as quercetin) is limited and these are mixed with phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine) from sunflower lecithin. The active ingredients are not encapsulated (as in liposomes), but a homogeneous mixture of small, easily absorbable particles is created. Bioflavonoids (such as quercetin) have a natural affinity for phospholipids. The result is the formation of phytosomes, where the bioflavonoids attach to the phospholipids. This allows them to be absorbed more effectively. Cell membranes (such as those in the small intestine) themselves consist of a phospholipid bilayer, allowing these phytosomes to easily pass through the intestinal wall and effectively absorb the active ingredients into the bloodstream. Studies have shown that the absorption and bioavailability of quercetin are improved by 10-20 times with this Phytosome® technology.
Unlike liposome technology
In a liposome, the active ingredient is located in the center of a sphere with a double layer of phospholipids. With Phytosome® technology, the mixture is truly homogeneous, and the active ingredient is not encapsulated. This means you need significantly less phospholipids than with liposomes.
