Vitals Milk Thistle-PS Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is an herb with a very strong reputation. The name "milk thistle" comes from the legend that the white spots on the leaves come from the milk of the Virgin Mary. For milk thistle supplements, the seeds (fruit) are typically used for extraction. The black pericarp contains flavonolignans (including silymarin, with silybin as its main component), flavonoids, and phenolic derivatives. Silybin is the main active ingredient. Vitals' Milk Thistle-PS contains the branded ingredient Siliphos®, a silybin extract with significantly improved bioavailability through the combination with phosphatidylcholine (Phytosome® technology). It is standardized to 60 mg silybin per capsule.
Improved bioavailability through Phytosome® technology
The bioavailability of Milk Thistle-PS has been significantly improved through the application of the patented Phytosome® technology from the Italian manufacturer Indena. The term Phytosome (or phytosome) comes from the Greek words phuton (plant) and soma (body, particle). During the patented production process, the natural aggregation of specific, poorly absorbable phytonutrients (such as those from milk thistle) is limited and these are mixed with phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine) from sunflower lecithin. The active ingredients are not encapsulated (as in liposomes), but a homogeneous mixture of small, easily absorbable combined particles is created. The active ingredients from milk thistle are both lipophilic (flavonolignans) and hydrophilic (phenol derivatives, flavonoids). Phospholipids are lipophilic on one side and hydrophilic on the other. This encourages the phytonutrients to bind to the phospholipids and form phytosomes. This promotes their absorption. Cell membranes (such as those of intestinal cells) themselves consist of a phospholipid bilayer, allowing for effective absorption of the active ingredients. Studies have shown that the use of this Phytosome technology increases the bioavailability of silybin from Siliphos® by 10 times compared to standard milk thistle extract.
Unlike liposome technology
In a liposome, the active ingredient is located in the center of a sphere with a double layer of phospholipids. Phytosome technology uses a truly homogeneous mixture, and the active ingredient is not encapsulated. This means you need significantly fewer phospholipids than with liposomes.
