Vitals L-Lysine 500mgApproximately five hundred amino acids occur in nature. Twenty of these are amino acids that serve as building blocks for proteins in the human body; these are referred to as 'fundamental amino acids'. These fundamental amino acids can be further divided into the categories 'essential', 'semi-essential', and 'non-essential'. L-lysine belongs to the so-called essential amino acids, which means that the body cannot produce them itself from other amino acids, and that one is completely dependent on diet to meet daily requirements. In vegetarians and vegans, lysine intake can be insufficient, as animal proteins, in particular, are rich in lysine.
L-lysine is the precursor to the amino acid carnitine. This product uses the natural L-form of lysine, and not the synthetic D-form. Only the L-form is physiologically active. Lysine for use in food supplements is produced by fermentation by microorganisms. Plants and microorganisms can indeed produce lysine themselves from the amino acid aspartic acid.
