Vitals' Elke Dag multivitamins are headed by Elke Dag Platinum. We use the "Platinum" designation for the highest-dosage, most complete version in a series. And that's certainly true for this multivitamin, where two tablets a day provide the optimal dosage. It's the first choice for anyone who wants the best of the best.
A major challenge when formulating a multivitamin and mineral supplement is the limited space available within a tablet. Certain key macrominerals, such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium, are often lacking. Price, of course, also plays a significant role. This often comes at the expense of important but expensive nutrients like vitamin K2 and Q10. When developing Elke Dag Platinum, we created more space by assuming two tablets per day. This eliminates the need to take various other basic supplements to achieve the most desirable daily dosages. The result is a multivitamin with generous doses of magnesium (100 mg), calcium (200 mg), potassium (300 mg), and vitamin C (400 mg), as well as high doses of vitamin K2 (180 mcg) and vitamin D3 (50 mcg). And the addition of special nutrients such as lutein, zeaxanthin, meso-zeaxanthin, taurine, acetyl-L-carnitine, alpha-lipoic acid, Q10 and PQQ.
For whom
Elke Dag Platinum is for adults and seniors who benefit from higher doses and don't want to take a separate calcium, magnesium, potassium, and/or vitamin C, D, or K supplement in addition to their multivitamin. It's ideal for supporting an active lifestyle (busy lifestyle, demanding jobs, physical work, sports) or for doing everything possible to age as healthily as possible.
Based on recent data and insights
Elke Dag Platinum is a carefully designed multivitamin with essential micronutrients and special supplements. Its composition focuses on easily absorbable substances and compounds, in the correct proportions and dosages that matter. For each nutrient, the average intake of adults and the elderly in the Netherlands is taken into account, as well as the estimated daily requirement to support or promote optimal health. The evidence for the recommended daily allowances (RDAs) was examined, but deviations were made where necessary based on evolving (orthomolecular) insights gained from (recent) scientific research. Naturally, choices must be made, as a tablet only fits a limited amount, and the price cannot be too high. Elke Dag Platinum is very well-founded, excels in many respects, and will easily compare with other multivitamins.
1. The term RDA is used here because it is still the most well-known term, but it has now been replaced by the term RI (Reference Intake). These are legal guidelines established by the European Commission. These guidelines provide an indication of the amount of vitamins and minerals an average adult needs. No distinction is made based on age, gender, or specific circumstances. The amount of vitamins and minerals in a dietary supplement is stated on the label as a percentage (%) of the RI. However, RIs may deviate from the recommended amounts established by the Health Council.
B vitamins in optimal forms and dosages
Elke Dag Platinum contains generous but responsible doses of B vitamins. We carefully considered daily requirements, average intake, and their distribution. This also takes into account the body's ability to metabolize the various B vitamins, the latest scientific insights, and safe upper intake levels.
Elke Dag Platinum contains the biologically active (coenzyme) forms of vitamin B2 (riboflavin-5'-phosphate), B6 (pyridoxal-5'-phosphate), B12 (methyl- and adenosylcobalamin), and folic acid (5-methyltetrahydrofolate glucosamine salt). These are the forms used by the body, and research shows that they have higher bioavailability in the body.
Folic acid as 5-methyltetrahydrofolate
Folic acid (pteroylmonoglutamic acid), often used in dietary supplements for stability reasons, is a synthetic form that doesn't occur naturally. It occurs in food as folate. The body must convert folic acid into tetrahydrofolate and then into 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). Research shows that this complex conversion process is far from optimal in a significant number of people. Supplementing with 5-MTHF circumvents this problem.
Elke Dag Platinum uses the superior form of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate bound to glucosamine salt (branded Quatrefolic®). This binding with glucosamine salt (from a plant source) allows the biologically active form to remain stable and ensures optimal absorption. Studies show that Quatrefolic® has higher water solubility, stability, and bioavailability. Furthermore, 5-MTHF is able to cross the blood-brain barrier, unlike the "regular" (synthetic) form of folic acid.
Vitamin B12 as methyl- and adenosylcobalamin
Vitamin B12 absorption from food is a complex process. Furthermore, there are indications that the RDA (or RI) of 2.5 mcg per day is underestimated, and the requirements of healthy adults and the elderly can vary by up to 20 mcg per day. Due to the safety of vitamin B12 supplementation and the sometimes difficult absorption of B12 from food and supplements, Elke Dag Platinum contains a full 40 mcg of vitamin B12 in the biologically active forms methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin.
Many B12 products and multivitamins contain cyanocobalamin, a cheaper, synthetic form of vitamin B12 that doesn't occur naturally and must be converted by the body into the active forms. This process detaches the cyanide moiety from the cobalamin, which then needs to be cleared by the body. Studies therefore show that vitamin B12 in the form of methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin has a higher bioavailability than cyanocobalamin.
Vitamin D
In recent years, European government agencies have determined that the level for adequate dietary vitamin D intake should be higher (15 mcg) and that the maximum permitted dose could be increased (100 mcg). In the Netherlands, they are still cautious, indicating that 10 mcg is sufficient and that the maximum amount is 75 mcg. The RDA/RI, strangely enough, remains stuck at 5 mcg. However, the importance of higher doses has been known for some time in the orthomolecular world. Leading vitamin D experts recommend that vitamin D levels (calcidiol levels) should be at least 75 nmol/l. To maintain such a vitamin D level, an oral dose of vitamin D3, estimated at 25-75 mcg per day, is needed. Elke Dag Platinum therefore contains a generous dose of 50 mcg per two tablets.
Vitamin K
Each Day Platinum contains 45 mcg of vitamin K1 and 180 mcg of vitamin K2. Vitamin K1 is primarily absorbed by the liver and activates clotting factors, while vitamin K2 is distributed much more widely throughout the body's tissues. The standard RDA for vitamin K is based on the amount needed for normal blood clotting. This does not consider the optimal dosage for other, crucial functions of vitamin K, such as ensuring that calcium is properly absorbed and reaches its intended destination: the bones. Furthermore, standard recommendations do not distinguish between vitamin K1 and K2. Vitamin K2 is absorbed 10x better and has a much greater bioavailability than vitamin K1. Therefore, vitamin K2 is much more effective in achieving optimal vitamin K status and superior to vitamin K1. Vitamin K2 is also much more effective than vitamin K1 in activating specific vitamin K-dependent enzymes. These activated enzymes ensure that calcium finds its way into the bones. Research has shown that 180 mcg of vitamin K2 is the optimal daily dose. And research has shown that it's important to maintain bone health and not wait until it's too late.
Stability of vitamin K2
Vitamin K2 appears to be a very sensitive substance. Especially when combined with calcium and/or magnesium, the vitamin content in a tablet or capsule decreases rapidly. Using vitamin K2 in a product with high doses of calcium and/or magnesium is technically challenging. Therefore, Vitals uses a high-quality K2 ingredient branded K2Vital Delta, which is stable even in a formula high in these minerals. A patented micro-encapsulation process is used, protecting the fat-soluble K2 particles with two layers (gum arabic and starch) from air, light, and interaction with other ingredients. Vitals has commissioned independent laboratory research into the stability of K2Vital Delta, as well as other vitamin K2 brands, specifically in combination with the ingredients used in Vitals products. The conclusions were that protecting the K2 is absolutely necessary, that K2 levels remained well stable with K2Vital Delta, and that it was superior to the other K2 ingredients.
High doses of natural calcium and magnesium from the sea
A unique feature of this multivitamin is its high doses of calcium and magnesium, so these don't need to be taken separately. Very convenient. The source of these minerals is also special: they are from the Aquamin® brand and come from the sea. The magnesium (Aquamin Magnesium) is obtained from the seawater of the Irish Sea, and studies show that it is exceptionally well absorbed by the body. In addition to approximately 35% elemental magnesium, the ingredient also contains small amounts of more than 70 trace elements. The calcium (Aquamin Calcium) comes from a red algae called Lithothamnium calcareum. This algae species absorbs and stores minerals and trace elements from the sea. While alive, it has a beautiful red/pink color, but when it dies, it calcifies and turns white or light gray. Only calcified red algae is harvested, from the waters off the coast of Iceland. In addition to 32% calcium, the ingredient also contains 3% magnesium and small amounts of more than 70 trace elements. The synergistic effect of the natural trace element profile of this calcium and magnesium may partly explain the improved absorption and the impressive studies that have been conducted with it.
Potassium is also well represented
Potassium is often one of the first minerals to be neglected when formulating a multivitamin and mineral supplement. This is because the daily potassium requirement is high (around 3500 mg per day for adults) and not much fits into a tablet. Therefore, you often see no potassium or very low doses in multivitamins. But Elke Dag Platinum also provides a whopping 300 mg of potassium! This is quite unique, yet very important. Besides the many standard recommendations to watch your salt (sodium) intake, studies and articles from the orthomolecular field also recommend increasing your potassium intake. Moreover, a recent food consumption survey shows that the average daily intake for adults in the Netherlands is around 3200 mg, while the recommended amount is 3500 mg. Therefore, getting an extra 300 mg of potassium daily through a multivitamin is not a luxury.
Iron, zinc, copper and manganese as amino acid chelate (bisglycinate)
Amino acid chelates (bisglycinates) were chosen for the minerals iron, zinc, copper, and manganese. Each mineral particle is strongly bound (chelated) to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. Minerals in this form easily reach the small intestine and are highly absorbed. They are also gentle on the stomach, which can be a significant advantage, especially in the case of iron (Ferrochel®). Furthermore, Vitals specifically chooses amino acid chelates from Albion Minerals, recognizable by the trademark TRAACS®, which stands for The Real Amino Acid Chelate System. This brand was created to clearly differentiate itself from other, potentially inferior, unstable amino acid chelates. Albion has filed over 100 patents worldwide that guarantee the process, science, and structure of its amino acid chelated minerals.
A generous amount of choline
Choline has been a standard ingredient in multivitamins for a long time. But almost always in low doses (between 10-30 mg). This was because not much was known about it. But more and more is becoming known! In 2012, the European Commission approved three health claims for choline, which apply to a dosage of at least 82.5 mg. It is important for normal lipid and homocysteine metabolism and important for normal liver function. In 2016, the RDA was set at 550 mg/day in the US, based on clinical research specifically designed to determine daily requirements. In 2016, the EFSA also deemed choline an essential nutrient but did not yet establish an RDA. The adequate intake was set at 400 mg/day, based on the average intake in European countries, not the US study. The average intake of adults in Europe ranges between 291 and 468 mg/day. Reason enough to include a generous amount of choline in a daily multivitamin. Elke Dag Platinum contains a whopping 170 mg of choline from the VitaCholine® brand. This brand stands for superior quality and has been extensively researched.
Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin
In addition to 10 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin, Elke Dag Platinum also contains 10 mg of mesozeaxanthin, which is quite unique and based on recent research. These are natural carotenoids found in high concentrations in the retina and macula lutea. The body cannot produce lutein and zeaxanthin itself, but must obtain them from food. These are found in green leafy vegetables, and red, yellow, and orange fruits and vegetables. Mesozeaxanthin is only found in very limited quantities in food (shrimp, salmon skin, trout skin and flesh). It is primarily produced in the retina by converting lutein through an enzymatic reaction. However, it can be supplemented effectively.
Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) is a naturally occurring substance found in the mitochondria (the so-called "energy factories") of every cell in our body. Loosely translated, "ubiquinone" means "ubiquitous." With age, the body's own production of coenzyme Q10 gradually declines. Therefore, Elke Dag Platinum contains a generous 50 mg dose.
Taurine
Taurine is a semi-essential nutrient for adults and is synthesized primarily in the liver and brain from the sulfur-containing amino acids cysteine and methionine; vitamin B6 is involved in this conversion. Endogenous synthesis is limited, and dietary intake is important for adequate taurine status, especially when taurine requirements are elevated. Since taurine is primarily found in meat, fish, and poultry, vegetarians and vegans are more likely to have insufficient dietary intake.
Acetyl-L-carnitine
In food, carnitine is mainly found in (red) meat and to a much lesser extent in plant foods. Carnitine can be converted into acetyl-L-carnitine and vice versa as needed. In the liver, kidneys, and brain, carnitine can be synthesized from the amino acids lysine and methionine, with vitamin C, iron, vitamin B6, and niacin as cofactors. Acetyl-L-carnitine supplementation has the advantage over L-carnitine in that it crosses the blood-brain barrier more easily.
Alpha-lipoic acid
Alpha-lipoic acid is a sulfur-containing fatty acid found in the mitochondria of every cell. It is soluble in both fat and water, which is an important property. Small amounts of alpha-lipoic acid are produced in the body. It is also found in small amounts in foods, such as liver, spinach, and broccoli.
PQQ
Pyrroloquinoline quinone disodium salt (PQQ) is a substance discovered in 1964 and found in small amounts in fermented foods like natto and tofu, eggs, breast milk, and certain herbs, vegetables, and fruits. The body also produces very small amounts. Elke Dag Platinum uses PQQ derived from natural fermentation.
