Vitals Elke dag mamaElke Dag Mama is a carefully designed multi-vitamin for women who are planning a pregnancy, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding. This is, of course, a special and important period in which the health of the (expectant) mother, but also of the baby, must be optimally supported.
The product is formulated based on the most recent scientific insights, aligned with current data regarding nutritional status in the Netherlands and Belgium, and optimal intake levels per nutrient. Elke Dag Mama contains the most important nutrients in the correct proportions and in dosages according to the latest insights. Only highly absorbable compounds have been chosen.
Vitamin A should not be missing in a pregnancy multi-vitamin
Many pregnant women are warned about the dangers of too much vitamin A. However, the need for vitamin A is higher during pregnancy and certainly during breastfeeding. It is therefore important not to be overly cautious with vitamin A intake. Elke Dag Mama therefore contains not only 3 mg of natural beta-carotene (pro-vitamin A), but also 150 μg of vitamin A as retinol. This is a low and very safe dosage of vitamin A. The body will not convert more of the available beta-carotene into vitamin A than it needs, and this will therefore not lead to excessively high vitamin A levels.
Special form of folic acid
It is well known that folic acid is very important before and during pregnancy. Elke Dag Mama contains 400 mcg of a superior, biologically active form of folic acid (folate) bound to glucosamine salt (Quatrefolic®).
Folic acid (pteroylmonoglutamic acid), which is usually used in food supplements for stability reasons, is a synthetic form that does not occur naturally. In food, this important B vitamin is found as folate. Folic acid from supplements must be converted by the body into tetrahydrofolate and then into 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF).
Generous dosage of vitamin B12: also for pregnant women with a predominantly plant-based diet
Elke Dag Mama contains a generous dosage of 50 mcg of vitamin B12 in the biologically active forms of methyl- and adenosylcobalamin. Elke Dag Mama is therefore also suitable for pregnant women who eat vegetarian or vegan. The cheaper, synthetic cyanocobalamin was deliberately not chosen. This form of B12 does not occur naturally in food or in the human body.
Extra high dosage of choline (VitaCholine®)
Choline has been a standard ingredient in multivitamins for years, but usually in low dosages (10–30 mg). This was mainly due to limited knowledge about the physiological role and the required intake of choline at the time. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, choline is extra important. The formula therefore contains no less than 150 mg of VitaCholine® per tablet, a high-quality and well-researched form of choline.
Vitamin C, iron, and iodine: even more important during pregnancy
Women generally need more iron than men. During pregnancy, women need even more iron to support the production of cells and tissues. Elke Dag Mama therefore contains a generous daily dose of 16 mg of iron from the stomach-friendly iron bisglycinate (Ferrochel®). This is one of the highly absorbable amino acid chelates from Albion® Minerals.
Optimal vitamin D dosage, from plant-based source
Elke Dag Mama contains a more generous vitamin D dosage than the other Elke Dag multi-vitamins due to the extra great importance of an optimal micronutrient status during this special phase of life. Elke Dag Mama also uses plant-based vitamin D3 (Vitamin D3V®). This is produced from algae, and not from sheep's wool fat (like many vitamin D3 products).
Vitamin K1 and K2: related but not interchangeable
Current dietary guidelines for vitamin K are based on the amount needed for normal blood clotting. They do not consider the optimal intake of vitamin K concerning other vitamin K-dependent bodily processes. Furthermore, these guidelines do not distinguish between vitamin K1 and vitamin K2, although this is receiving increasing attention in science.
Elke Dag Mama contains, unlike the other Elke Dag multi-vitamins, a higher proportion of vitamin K1 than vitamin K2.
K2VITAL™ DELTA: vitamin K2 with optimal stability
Vitamin K2 turns out to be a very sensitive substance. Especially in combination with calcium and/or magnesium, the content of this vitamin in a tablet or capsule decreases sharply. The use of vitamin K2 in a product with high doses of calcium and/or magnesium is a real technical challenge. Vitals therefore uses a K2 ingredient with the brand name K2VITAL™ DELTA, which is even stable in a formula with many of these minerals, as found in the Elke Dag multi-vitamins.
K2VITAL™ DELTA is produced through a patented micro-encapsulation process, where the fat-soluble K2 particles are protected with two layers against interaction with other ingredients. Vitals had an independent laboratory conduct research into the stability of K2VITAL™ DELTA, and it came out as the best in the test compared to other vitamin K2 brands.
Natural calcium and magnesium from the sea
For the Elke Dag multi-vitamins, Aquamin® Magnesium from Irish Sea water and Aquamin® Calcium from red algae (Lithothamnion sp) are used. These algae species absorb minerals and trace elements from seawater and store them. When alive, red algae have a beautiful reddish-pink color, but when they die, calcification occurs and the algae turn white or light gray. These calcified algae are harvested from the waters along the coast of Iceland.
The percentage of calcium (32%) and magnesium (35%) in Aquamin® is relatively high compared to other calcium and magnesium compounds. This makes it possible to achieve meaningful dosages of calcium and magnesium in a tablet or capsule that is very full of active ingredients (such as a multivitamin).
Lutein
Lutein is a naturally occurring carotenoid.
The body cannot produce lutein itself but must obtain it from food. It is found in green leafy vegetables, and red, yellow, and orange vegetables and fruits, among others.
