Elke Dag Tablets has been the most popular version of the Elke Dag series for years. This is a once-a-day multivitamin in tablet form, suitable for adults 18 years and older. It is a carefully designed multivitamin with essential micronutrients and special supplements. The composition focuses as much as possible on easily absorbable substances and compounds, in the correct ratios and with the most optimal dosages. Of course, choices were made here, as only a limited amount fits in a tablet. Elke Dag will easily compare with other multivitamins and is, with good reason, the first choice of many therapists.
What's new?
The composition has been revised based on the latest scientific insights, aligned with current data regarding nutritional status in the Netherlands and optimal intake amounts for each nutrient. The dosage of some nutrients has been reduced. This applies, for example, to the various B vitamins. In a multivitamin suitable for long-term use as a dietary supplement, excessive dosages are often unnecessary. Furthermore, the necessity of some nutrients as a daily supplement was lacking substantiation, so they were omitted from the formula. This includes inositol, PABA, and chromium. By reducing the dosage of the B vitamins, omitting the three nutrients mentioned, and using alternative forms of binding in some cases, space was created in the tablet and price to increase the dosage of other important nutrients. For example, more is known about the recommended intake of choline, and this has been increased from 25 mg to 85 mg per tablet. Additionally, the vitamin C dosage has been increased from 100 mg to 160 mg, the magnesium dosage has tripled, increasing from 30 mg to 100 mg, and the calcium dosage has increased fivefold, from 30 mg to 150 mg! These are nutrients that take up a relatively large amount of space, but it's crucial to get enough of them daily. Furthermore, the formula has been made more complete with meso-zeaxanthin, supplementing the lutein and zeaxanthin. Finally, vitamin K1 has been added, and the amounts of vitamins K2, D3, and Q10 have been increased.
For whom
Elke Dag is specifically designed for adults. Vitals has developed separate multivitamins for children, seniors, and women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. See also Elke Dag Junior, Elke Dag 50+, and Elke Dag Mama. Teenagers and (young) adults can choose Elke Dag Basic (1 capsule per day) or Elke Dag Capsules (1 capsule per day for teenagers and 2 capsules per day for adults). In addition, Elke Dag Powder is available for those who prefer not to take capsules or tablets, or who prefer to mix the multivitamin with something. Adults and seniors who want the best of the best can choose Elke Dag Platinum (two tablets per day).
B vitamins in optimal forms and dosages
The Elke Dag multivitamins contain generous but responsible amounts of B vitamins. We carefully considered daily needs, average intakes, and their lower limits. This also takes into account the body's ability to metabolize the various B vitamins, the latest scientific insights, and the safe upper intake levels.
All formulas also contain the biologically active forms of vitamin B2 (riboflavin-5'-phosphate), B6 (pyridoxal-5'-phosphate), B12 (methyl- and adenosylcobalamin), and folic acid (5-methyltetrahydrofolate glucosamine salt). These are the forms used by the body, and research shows that they have higher bioavailability in the body.
Vitamin B6 as pyridoxal-5'-phosphate
Very high doses of vitamin B6 can occasionally lead to tingling or numbness in the hands or feet. Therefore, in the Netherlands, a maximum safe upper limit of 21 mg per day is used for vitamin supplements for adults. Elke Dag multivitamins remain well below this limit (maximum 4.2 mg). Furthermore, only pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (P-5'-P), the biologically active form of vitamin B6, is used, and not pyridoxine HCL, which still needs to be converted in the body. Further research is currently underway to determine whether the aforementioned occasional side effects occur only with vitamin B6 in the form of pyridoxine HCL and not, or to a lesser extent, with pyridoxal-5'-phosphate. There are indications that only high doses of pyridoxine HCL are toxic to nerve cells.
Folic acid as 5-methyltetrahydrofolate
Folic acid (pteroylmonoglutamic acid), often used in dietary supplements for stability reasons, is a synthetic form that doesn't occur naturally. It occurs in food as folate. Folic acid from supplements must be converted by the body into tetrahydrofolate and then into 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). Research shows that this complex conversion process is far from optimal in a significant number of people. Supplementing with 5-MTHF circumvents this problem.
The Elke Dag multivitamins use the superior form of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, bound to glucosamine salt (branded Quatrefolic®). This binding with glucosamine salt (from a plant source) allows the biologically active form to remain stable and ensures optimal absorption. Studies show that Quatrefolic® has higher water solubility, stability, and bioavailability. Furthermore, 5-MTHF is able to cross the blood-brain barrier, unlike the "regular" (synthetic) form of folic acid.
Vitamin B12 as methyl- and adenosylcobalamin
The absorption of vitamin B12 from food is a complex process. Furthermore, there are indications that the RI (formerly RDA) of 2.5 mcg per day has been underestimated, and the requirements of healthy adults and the elderly can vary and reach over 20 mcg per day. Due to the safety of vitamin B12 supplementation and the sometimes difficult absorption of B12 from food and supplements, Elke Dag multivitamins contain generous doses of the biologically active forms methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin.
Many other B12 products and multivitamins contain cyanocobalamin, a cheaper, synthetic form of vitamin B12 that doesn't occur naturally and must be converted by the body into its active forms. This process detaches the cyanide moiety from the cobalamin (B12) and then requires the body to clear it. Studies therefore show that vitamin B12 in the form of methyl- and adenosylcobalamin has a higher bioavailability than cyanocobalamin.
Generous doses of vitamin D, from a plant source
In recent years, European government agencies have determined that the level for adequate dietary vitamin D intake should be higher (15 mcg) and that the maximum permitted dose could be increased (100 mcg). In the Netherlands, they are still cautious, indicating that 10 mcg is sufficient and that the maximum amount is 75 mcg. The RI (or RDA) has, strangely enough, remained at 5 mcg. However, the importance of higher doses has been known for some time in the orthomolecular world. Leading vitamin D experts recommend that the vitamin D level (calcidiol level) of adults should be at least 75 nmol/l. To maintain such a vitamin D level, an oral dose of vitamin D3, estimated at 25-75 mcg per day, is needed.
The Elke Dag multivitamins contain generous doses of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). This form is much more effective than vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) at raising vitamin D levels. Furthermore, the new Elke Dag multivitamins use plant-based vitamin D3 (Vitamin D3V®). It is produced from algae, not sheep's wool fat (like the vast majority of vitamin D3 products). This makes all multivitamins in the Elke Dag series suitable for vegans.
Vitamin K1 and K2
The Elke Dag multivitamins now also contain a small amount of vitamin K1, in addition to a higher dose of vitamin K2. Vitamin K1 is primarily absorbed by the liver and primarily activates clotting factors, while vitamin K2 has greater bioavailability, is distributed more widely throughout the body's tissues, and is therefore more effective at activating other vitamin K-dependent enzymes such as osteocalcin and MGP. These enzymes ensure, among other things, that calcium is properly absorbed and ends up in the right place: the bones.
The body will always use vitamin K first for its vital blood clotting function. Because vitamin K2 is a much more expensive raw material than vitamin K1, a small amount of K1 is added to multivitamins so it can be used for the primary blood clotting function, leaving K2 for other, vital functions.
The standard RI for vitamin K is based on the amount needed for normal blood clotting. Oddly enough, this hasn't considered the optimal dosage of vitamin K for other vitamin K-dependent bodily processes.
Stability of vitamin K2
Vitamin K2 appears to be a very sensitive substance. Especially when combined with calcium and/or magnesium, the vitamin content in a tablet or capsule decreases rapidly. Using vitamin K2 in a product with high doses of calcium and/or magnesium is technically challenging. Therefore, Vitals uses a K2 ingredient branded K2Vital® Delta, which is stable even in a formula high in these minerals. A patented micro-encapsulation process is used, protecting the fat-soluble K2 particles with two layers from air, light, and interaction with other ingredients. Vitals commissioned an independent laboratory to test the stability of K2Vital® Delta, which performed best in the test. It was compared with other vitamin K2 brands, specifically in combination with the ingredients used in Vitals products. The conclusions were that protecting the K2 is absolutely necessary, that K2 levels remained well stable with K2Vital® Delta, and that it was superior to the other K2 ingredients.
Natural calcium and magnesium from the sea
From now on, the multivitamins will use calcium and magnesium from the Aquamin® brand, sourced from the sea. This allows the tablets to achieve much higher doses than previously used compounds, while the absorption of these ingredients has been proven to be good.
The magnesium (Aquamin Magnesium) is derived from the seawater of the Irish Sea, and studies show that it is well absorbed by the body. In addition to approximately 35% elemental magnesium, the raw material also contains small amounts of over 70 trace elements.
The calcium (Aquamin Calcium) comes from a red algae called Lithothamnium calcareum. This algae species absorbs and stores minerals and trace elements from the sea. While alive, it has a beautiful red/pink color, but when it dies, it calcifies and turns white or light gray. Only calcified red algae is harvested, from the waters off the coast of Iceland. In addition to 32% calcium, the raw material also contains 3% magnesium and small amounts of over 70 trace elements.
The synergistic effect of the natural trace element profile of this calcium and magnesium may partly explain the improved absorption and the impressive studies that have been conducted with it.
Iron, zinc, copper and manganese as amino acid chelate (bisglycinate)
Amino acid chelates (bisglycinates) were chosen for the minerals iron, zinc, copper, and manganese. Each mineral particle is strongly bound (chelated) to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. Minerals in this form easily reach the small intestine and are highly absorbed. They are also gentle on the stomach, which can be a significant advantage, especially in the case of iron. Furthermore, Vitals specifically chooses amino acid chelates from Albion Minerals, recognizable by the trademark TRAACS®, which stands for The Real Amino Acid Chelate System. This brand was created to clearly differentiate itself from other, potentially inferior, unstable amino acid chelates. Albion has filed over 100 patents worldwide that guarantee the process, science, and structure of its amino acid chelated minerals.
Unique: relatively high dose of choline
Choline has been a standard ingredient in multivitamins for a long time. But almost always in low doses (between 10-30 mg). This was because little was known about it. But more and more is becoming known! In 2012, the European Commission approved three health claims for choline, which apply to a dosage of at least 82.5 mg. It is important for normal lipid metabolism, homocysteine metabolism, and normal liver function. In 2016, a RDA of 550 mg/day was established for the first time in the United States, based on clinical research specifically intended to determine daily requirements. In 2016, the EFSA also deemed choline an essential nutrient, but has not yet established an RI. The adequate intake was established at 400 mg/day, based on the average intake in European countries, and not based on the American study, which determined a value of 550 mg/day. The average intake of adults in Europe ranges from 291 to 468 mg/day. Reason enough to include a generous amount of choline in a daily multivitamin!
The Elke Dag multivitamins contain choline from the VitaCholine® brand. This brand stands for superior quality and has been extensively researched.
Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin
Lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin are natural carotenoids. These substances are found in high concentrations in the body's retina and macula lutea. The body cannot produce lutein and zeaxanthin itself, but must obtain them from food. These are found in green leafy vegetables, and red, yellow, and orange fruits and vegetables. Meso-zeaxanthin is found in very limited amounts in food (shrimp, salmon skin, trout skin and flesh). It is primarily produced in the retina by converting lutein through an enzymatic reaction. Supplementation is effective, however. Meso-zeaxanthin has only recently become known to be a very effective supplement and is preferred over supplementation of lutein and zeaxanthin alone.
