Vitals Collagen Formula pro Collagen Formula Pro contains type II collagen (from chicken cartilage) under the brand name UC-II®. This collagen is produced by Interhealth, a renowned American supplier. Interhealth has invested heavily in the scientific substantiation of this product. Several human studies with UC-II® have been conducted with good results. A key distinguishing feature of UC-II® is that it is a so-called "undenatured" form of type II collagen. This means that the collagen is still present in its original form in the product and still has the same three-dimensional (spiral) structure that can be recognized as such by the body. This contrasts with "denatured" type II collagen, which is also available as a supplement. In this case, the collagen has been processed through a hydrolyzation step (in which the collagen is split into smaller peptides through a chemical reaction with water). This changes the three-dimensional structure of the molecule, which is unfavorable. For comparison, only 40 mg of UC-II® containing undenatured type II collagen is required daily, while several grams of denatured type II collagen typically require use.
