Vitals Berberine 500 mg Berberine is an important bioactive compound found in the roots, stems, bark, and berries of the Berberis genus. Vitals uses a highly pure extract from the roots of the Berberis aristata species. This species is also known as Indian barberry or tree turmeric.
The plants containing berberine have been used for thousands of years in India, China, Japan, and many other countries. Since the 1950s, berberine has also been isolated as a substance and used as a dietary supplement. Scientific interest has grown enormously over the past twenty years, and approximately 200 articles on berberine are now published annually.
Absorption of berberine
Berberine remains partially in the gastrointestinal tract. It leaves beneficial bacteria untouched and is therefore an excellent prelude to or combined with a probiotic. After absorption through the intestinal mucosa, it is partly pumped back into the intestinal lumen, and partly broken down in the intestinal wall or liver. This explains why plasma levels of berberine remain low. However, studies have also shown that berberine and its metabolites are rapidly absorbed by the liver, kidneys, muscles, lungs, brain, heart, pancreas, and adipose tissue. Berberine levels in most tissues examined were found to be many times higher than blood plasma levels.
