Vitals Berberine 500mgBerberine is an important bioactive compound found in the roots, stem, bark, and berries of the Berberis plant genus, among other places. Vitals uses a highly pure extract from the roots of the Berberis aristata species, also known as Indian barberry or tree turmeric.
Plants containing berberine have been used for thousands of years in India, China, Japan, and many other countries. Since the 1950s, berberine has also been isolated as a compound and used as a dietary supplement. Over the past twenty years, scientific interest has grown enormously, with approximately 200 published articles on berberine appearing annually.
Absorption of berberine
A portion of berberine remains in the gastrointestinal tract. It does not affect beneficial bacteria and can therefore be excellently taken before or combined with a probiotic. After absorption through the intestinal mucosa, it is partly pumped back into the intestinal lumen, and partly broken down in the intestinal wall or liver. This explains why the plasma level of berberine remains low. However, studies have also shown that berberine and its metabolites are rapidly absorbed by the liver, kidneys, muscles, lungs, brain, heart, pancreas, and adipose tissue. The berberine level was found to be many times higher in most studied tissues than the blood plasma level.
