Carotenoids are yellow to reddish pigments that occur naturally in plants and certain microorganisms. They play a key role in energy transfer during photosynthesis. They also protect these organisms from the harmful effects of sunlight. Astaxanthin, a very special carotenoid with a characteristic red color, is produced naturally by plankton, algae, and some plants, fungi, and bacteria. The highest concentration of astaxanthin is found in the green microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis (which is also the source of Vitals' Astamax).
Astaxanthin enters the food chain via plankton and algae, providing the pinkish-red pigment in aquatic animals such as salmon, trout, shrimp, crab, lobster, and crayfish, as well as some birds like the flamingo. For these animals, astaxanthin acts as a vitamin-like substance. Due to its unique properties, astaxanthin has the ability to occupy the optimal hydrophilic and hydrophobic positions in the lipid bilayer of cell and mitochondrial membranes.
Superior source and production method
The astaxanthin selected by Vitals is AstaREAL®, from the Swedish manufacturer of the same name, AstaReal, the pioneer and expert in natural astaxanthin.
