Vegan by lichen, 100% plant-based
The primary raw material for vitamin D production is lanolin. This is produced by exposing the fat from sheep's wool (lanolin) to UV light. Due to the use of animal wool, vitamin D produced from lanolin is not, strictly speaking, considered vegan.
Vitakruid's Vitamin D3 Vegan is made from lichen and is therefore 100 percent plant-based! Lichens produce vitamin D3 in a similar way to humans, using UV radiation (sunlight). This allows us to maintain the high absorption rate of vitamin D3!
Vitamin D3 is the best form
Due to the sparse sunshine in the cold Benelux region, insufficient vitamin D levels are often a reality. Nevertheless, the forms ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) can be found in mushrooms and animal-based foods, respectively.
Mushrooms and animals produce vitamin D in the same way as humans, under the influence of UV radiation (sunlight). The form you consume from animal products (vitamin D3) is even the exact same vitamin D that our skin produces, and therefore the most bioavailable form for our human digestive system.
