Vitakruid Sleep Complex including Valerian Magnesium Bisglycinate Nutrition and sleep
Melatonin plays a key role in falling asleep. This hormone regulates our circadian rhythm. During the day, light suppresses melatonin production, while in the evening, melatonin production increases (from the pineal gland in the brain). Our bodies produce a large portion of melatonin itself; the contribution from food is minimal.
The sleep hormone can also be produced from tryptophan. The body converts tryptophan into 5-HTP, which in turn converts into serotonin. Serotonin can then be converted into melatonin. This conversion process requires various cofactors, such as magnesium, B vitamins, zinc, calcium, and amino acids. Foods rich in tryptophan generally also contain these beneficial substances. Incidentally, SleepComplex does not contain melatonin.
Foods that positively influence sleep:
- Tryptophan-rich foods such as turkey, chicken, eggs, fish, dairy, walnuts, seeds, legumes, bananas, pineapple, pumpkin, spinach, and oatmeal.
- Sleep tea made from herbs such as valerian, hops, chamomile, passion flower, lavender and lemon balm.
Foods that negatively affect sleep:
- Caffeine-containing products such as coffee, black/white/green tea, energy drinks and chocolate.
- Alcohol
- Sugary foods
- Spicy and/or spicy food
- E621 or MSG
- Eating too late in the evening (2-3 hours before bedtime)
In addition, lifestyle changes can contribute to good sleep hygiene. For example, it's important to maintain a regular sleep schedule, create a dark and quiet bedroom, and limit screen use in the evening. SleepComplex can provide additional support alongside a healthy lifestyle and diet.
A base of herbs
Valerian, passionflower, lemon balm, and green tea form the core of SleepComplex. Griffonia simplicifolia—also known as California poppy—is an African plant that naturally contains high concentrations of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). This 5-HTP is the converted form of the essential amino acid tryptophan. It acts as an intermediate step in the conversion of tryptophan to serotonin. 5-HTP serves as a building block for serotonin and is therefore a precursor to melatonin.
Well-absorbable magnesium bisglycinate
Magnesium is a mineral that promotes good mental balance and contributes to fitness. This makes it a valuable addition to the herbs in SleepComplex. Magnesium bisglycinate is bound to two glycine molecules, resulting in an amino acid chelated form. This structure is so robust that the mineral reaches the intestines intact and can be fully absorbed.
Safe form of vitamin B6
In SlaapComplex, vitamin B6 is included in the biologically active form of pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P-5-P). There are currently no known side effects attributable to this form based on recent scientific research. Furthermore, the vitamin B6 dosage in SlaapComplex (1 mg) is well below the maximum safe daily dose (21 mg). Magnesium requires vitamin B6 for cell absorption.
Folate helps absorption of magnesium and B12
Folate (5-MTHF) is the biologically active form of folic acid and is therefore better absorbed. It also enhances the absorption of both magnesium and vitamin B12. SlaapComplex contains the vitamin B12 form methylcobalamin, a biologically active form that no longer needs to be converted in the body.
