In addition, the acetyl bond protects the molecule against oxidation, which results in rapid dispersion in the cell. Subsequently, the enzymes present in the cell can split the bond very quickly. As a result, the body absorbs n-acetyl-l-cysteine well, unlike regular cysteine.
Precursor to Glutathione
Glutathione is a compound of three amino acids (tripeptide) that the body produces from cysteine, glutamine, and glycine. The latter two are very accessible through absorption from food, making them non-problematic factors for the formation of glutathione. Cysteine, on the other hand, is more difficult to obtain from food, which makes it the limiting factor within this compound. Moreover, cysteine is the active part of the glutathione molecule.
But if glutathione is so important to me, why don't I just take glutathione? Research shows that the body does not, or hardly, absorbs (reduced) glutathione. The gastrointestinal tract simply destroys the nutrient. Even dosages of three grams do not result in an increase in glutathione levels in the body. And since our body does absorb the acetylated form of cysteine, supplementation with the precursor to glutathione is more effective than taking (reduced) glutathione.
