Lactoferrin is a type of protein found primarily in the breast milk of mammals, both humans and animals. The very first breast milk produced, called colostrum, is particularly rich in this substance.
Hence the word "lacto," which refers to the richest source: milk. However, "ferrin" refers to lactoferrin's important ability to bind to iron.
