Lactose is a milk sugar found in milk-based dairy products. Your body uses the enzyme lactase, produced by the small intestine, to digest this milk sugar. When lactose is broken down, the sugars galactose and glucose are released, which are easily digested by the body.

About 70% of adults worldwide have insufficient intestinal lactase, meaning they have difficulty digesting lactose.
