D-ribose naturally occurs in small amounts in your daily diet. You mainly find it in animal foods, such as stewed and organ meats. These are rich in nucleotides, of which ribose is a building block.
For most people, that is sufficient. But if you have an active lifestyle or prefer to eat mostly plant-based, a D-ribose supplement can offer a solution.
The body can produce D-ribose itself from glucose via the pentose phosphate pathway, but this is a slow process. D-ribose from food or supplements can be used more quickly by the body.

D-Ribose is a natural sugar, a so-called monosaccharide, and consists of five carbon atoms. This makes it one of the rarer pentose sugars. Our D-Ribose contains the biologically active 'D'-form that the body can use directly. It is well and quickly absorbed by the body, with more than 80% being metabolized.
Building block of ATP
D-ribose is the specific form (isomer) of ribose involved in the production of ATP.
How is D-ribose converted to ATP?
- D-ribose is first converted to PRPP.
- PRPP provides the ribose needed for the synthesis of nucleotides such as AMP, ADP, and ATP.
- These nucleotides are converted to ATP through mitochondrial processes.
- ATP is the carrier of chemical energy in all living cells.
- When ATP is consumed, it can be reformed with the help of D-ribose – through reuse or new production.
