Borage (borago officinalis) is an herb derived from the borage plant, also known as cucumber herb. Pressing the seeds of the plant produces an oil with a high percentage of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). This omega-6 fatty acid is attributed with various health-promoting effects. This is why the ancient Greeks used the herb.

Of all oilseed crops, borage is the primary plant source of GLA. Its oil contains the highest percentage compared to other plants, such as evening primrose. For example, the GLA concentration in borage oil is more than twice that of evening primrose oil. 100 grams of borage oil contains 18-26 grams of GLA, while evening primrose contains only 7-10 grams. Furthermore, the substance is quite rare in nature: there are few foods from which you can obtain GLA. Therefore, a borage oil supplement is often a welcome addition to your diet!
