Berberine originates from the plant genus Berberis. An important part of this plant family is Berberis aristata, also known as Indian Barberry or Tree Turmeric. The high-quality berberine extract is formed from the roots of Berberis aristata. In countries like China, India, and Japan, the extract has been in use for thousands of years.

Berberine is a substance naturally found in the Berberis plant genus. The so-called barberry is one of the most well-known plants in this family; we find berberine in the roots, stem, bark, and berries of the shrub, among other places.
