Hato mugi (Semen coicis) pearl barley doesn't look like a grain. It's called pearl barley here, but it doesn't look like barley. It's actually the seeds of a wild grass. It's always cooked with rice or another grain and is often added to soups in the East.

Usage
This plant, reminiscent of rice and barley, produces a grain that lends itself perfectly to many dishes. Directions: Soak the hatomugi overnight, then add 3.5 parts water to one part pearl barley and cook for a longer period.
