Testjezelf.nu Multicheck HB strips

The hemoglobin (Hb) value of a blood sample is the concentration of hemoglobin in the blood, expressed in mmol/L or g/dL. Normal values are approximately 8.5–11 mmol/L in adult men and 7.5–10 mmol/L in adult women.

Different values apply for pregnant women and children. In Belgium, blood sugar is measured in g/dl, not mmol/l. Normal values are 13.6-17.7 g/dl for adult men and 12.0-16.0 g/dl for adult women.

The Multicheck PLUS meter can display both mmol/L and mg/dL. The meter can be set to the desired unit of measurement.

The HB level is used to detect possible anemia:

Anemia (from the Greek αναιμα, bloodless) is a condition characterized by low hemoglobin (Hb) levels in the blood. This can result from impaired production, increased breakdown, or loss of red blood cells. Hemoglobin is the red protein in blood that carries oxygen and carbon dioxide, and is found in red blood cells.

Hemoglobin contains iron, and an iron deficiency therefore leads to anemia. An iron deficiency can be the direct result of insufficient iron in the diet, but it can also result from an inability to absorb iron or from increased loss of existing iron. Iron deficiency is not the only cause of anemia; there are dozens of other possible causes, most of which are rare to very rare. In the Netherlands, anemia is defined as an Hb level below 7.5 mmol/l in women (6.8 in pregnant women) and below 8.5 mmol/l in men.

A low HB level very often indicates an iron deficiency. However, report a low HB level to your doctor. They can then determine the cause of the deficiency through additional testing. This is done by determining the MCV (mean corpuscular volume). This measurement will then provide an indication of the possible underlying cause.
