Charlemagne was so convinced of the special power of lemon balm that he had it (along with several other plants) included in the plant list of his Capitularis de Villis.
Lemon balm was one of the 16 magical herbs of Albertus Magnus (Albertus, Count of Bolstadt, 1193-1280).
The booklet “Liber aggregationis”, with a Dutch translation “Dat Boeck der Secreten Alberti Magni” was, according to some, written by him, and in it those 16 plants are listed.
The Carmelite monks produced their 'Melissengeest', an alcoholic drink based on lemon balm, since the early 17th century.
