DPP-IV (fully dipeptidyl peptidase IV) is an enzyme naturally present in the body, found among other places in the small intestine. There, it helps break down proteins from our food, especially so-called proline-rich proteins like gluten (from grains) and casein (from dairy products). Many "difficult" proteins are only partially broken down by common digestive enzymes. DPP-IV can cleave specific short protein chains (peptides) so that they can be better digested and absorbed.
Important: a DPP-IV supplement is not a substitute for a medical gluten-free diet for celiac disease or another diagnosed food allergy. In these situations, guidance from a doctor or dietitian remains necessary.
