Nova Vitae Sabal forte (saw palmetto) herbal tincture
Nova Vitae's Sabal Forte Herbal Tincture is made from Sabal serrulata or saw palmetto.
The saw palmetto, also known as Serenoa repens, is a species of palm tree that grows in the southeastern United States. It is also known as the dwarf palm, saw palmetto, or pygmy palm.

The palm grows from a low rootstock and has leaves with sharp serrations that resemble saw teeth, hence the name "saw palm." The palm produces small olive-green berries that turn from yellow-green to blue-purple when ripe. The ripe berries have long been used in herbal medicine.

The dried fruit of the saw palmetto is packed with vital substances. The extract, for example, contains phytosterols, which are plant compounds beneficial to your health. These phytosterols include delta-7 steroids, delta-5 steroids, betasitosterol, and other derivatives such as stigmasterol and campestrol, daucosterol, lupeol, lupenone, and methylcycloartenol. The fruit also contains various healthy fats, such as oleic acid, lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid, and linoleic acid. It also contains antioxidants known as flavonoids, such as isoquercitrin, D-glucosides, and rhoifolin.

Why is there alcohol in your Sabal serrulata product?
Alcohol is often used in making herbal tinctures because of its ability to effectively extract the active ingredients from herbs. Here are our reasons for using alcohol:

1. Efficient extraction of bioactive compounds: Alcohol is known for its ability to extract both water-soluble and fat-soluble compounds from plants. This makes it an efficient solvent for a wide range of bioactive compounds in herbs, including flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and essential oils.

2. Preservation: Alcohol has preservative properties, meaning it helps preserve the herbal tincture and prevent spoilage. The high alcohol content acts as a natural preservative, extending the tincture's shelf life.

3. Improved absorption: Alcohol is considered a highly absorbable medium for the human body. It can help efficiently transfer the active ingredients in the herbal tincture into the bloodstream, making them easier for the body to absorb.

The dosage of a herbal tincture is usually taken in drops, which results in a relatively small amount of alcohol per dose.
