Bovine collagen: what is it?
Bovine collagen is a protein extracted from cattle, particularly from their bones, skin, and other connective tissues.
What does the word hydrolysate actually mean?
In the context of proteins, such as this collagen, hydrolysis means that the protein is broken down into smaller units, known as peptides, by adding water and under the influence of enzymes or acids. This process often makes the protein easier to digest and absorb for the body. The end product of this process is called hydrolysate.
What is the importance of the fact that bovine collagen is extracted from cattle that have only eaten grass?
The use of collagen from grass-fed cattle is considered important for several reasons:
Nutritional value: Grass-fed cattle generally have a better nutritional profile compared to grain-fed cattle. Their meat often contains more omega-3 fatty acids and a better ratio of omega-6 to omega-3. Although these differences are mainly measurable in the fatty acids of the meat, it cannot be otherwise than that collagen from grass-fed cattle is also of higher quality.
Sustainability: Grass feeding is more environmentally friendly than grain feeding. Grasslands can store carbon, which helps combat climate change. Moreover, the production of grain for animal feed often requires more resources such as water, land, and pesticides.
Animal welfare: Grass-fed cattle spend more time outdoors, grazing on pastures, which is considered by many to be a more natural and humane life for livestock.
Chemicals and antibiotics: Grass-fed cattle are given fewer antibiotics and growth hormones than grain-fed cattle. In addition, they are often raised on organic farms, meaning they are not exposed to pesticides and artificial fertilizers that can be used in conventional grain production.
Purity and quality: products derived from grass-fed cattle are purer, as grass cannot contain unwanted additives or chemical residues.
- Peptan® collagen peptides are Type I Collagen Peptides. This means they are identical to the collagen present in the bones and skin of the human body. Peptan® is a very pure, natural bioactive product, containing more than 97% protein (based on dry weight). Peptan® collagen peptides are available from three raw material origins (fish (F), bovine (B), and porcine (P)). Peptan B and F are Kosher and Halal certified.
- Peptan® contains 18 amino acids, the building blocks of our tissues and the main component of proteins. Glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline represent approximately 50% of Peptan's® total amino acid content; the glycine and proline concentration in Peptan® is 10 to 20 times higher than in other proteins. Consequently, Peptan® offers health benefits not found in other protein sources.
