Nicotinamide riboside (NR) is a modern, easily absorbed form of vitamin B3 (niacin). While traditional forms of vitamin B3—such as niacin or nicotinamide—have been known for some time, nicotinamide riboside distinguishes itself through its direct involvement in the production of NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), an important substance found in all body cells.
What is Nicotinamide Riboside?
Nicotinamide riboside is a natural vitamin B3 compound found in small amounts in certain foods, such as milk and yeast. In supplement form, NR is valued for the way it provides the body with building blocks for NAD+ metabolism, which is essential for numerous cellular processes.
Difference between Vitamin B3 and Nicotinamide Riboside
Although all forms of vitamin B3—niacin, nicotinamide, and nicotinamide riboside—contribute to vitamin B3 function in the body, they are chemically different:
Niacin (nicotinic acid) can cause a temporary 'flush' (a warm feeling of the skin) at high doses.
