Malic acid is a substance naturally found in (sour) apples and pears.
Malic acid is considered an alpha-hydroxy acid, a class of natural acids often used in skincare products.

As a dietary supplement, malic acid has specific functions on its own, but also in combination with other minerals.
For example, malic acid combined with magnesium forms magnesium malate. Malate (or in fact malic acid) acts as the carrier for the absorption of magnesium in the body.
