What is 5-HTP?
5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is a naturally occurring substance in the body. It is produced from the amino acid tryptophan and is a precursor to the neurotransmitters serotonin and melatonin. Serotonin is one of the most important neurotransmitters in the brain. Melatonin regulates, among other things, the circadian rhythm, hormone release, and body temperature.
Why 5-HTP is preferred over L-tryptophan
5-HTP supplements have been used for a long time and have proven to be reliable and effective. 5-HTP is well absorbed by the body, even when taken with a meal, and can easily cross the blood-brain barrier. Unlike L-tryptophan, 5-HTP does not compete with other amino acids for absorption because it does not require a shared transport molecule. Furthermore, 5-HTP does not need to be metabolized in the body before becoming active, unlike L-tryptophan. Furthermore, most of L-tryptophan is used to produce proteins and other substances, leaving little for the production of serotonin and melatonin. Because of these advantages, 5-HTP is generally more effective, and lower doses are required to achieve results.
