What is 5-HTP?
5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is a naturally occurring substance in the body. It is produced from the amino acid tryptophan and is a precursor to the neurotransmitters serotonin and melatonin. Serotonin is one of the most important neurotransmitters in the brain. The neurotransmitter Melatonin regulates, among other things, the day and night rhythm, hormone release, and body temperature.
Why 5-HTP is preferred over L-tryptophan
Dietary supplements with 5-HTP have been used for a long time and have proven to be reliable and effective. 5-HTP is well absorbed by the body, even when taken with a meal, and can easily cross the blood-brain barrier. Unlike L-tryptophan, 5-HTP does not have to compete with other amino acids for absorption, as it does not require a shared transport molecule. Additionally, 5-HTP does not need to be converted in the body before it becomes active. This is not the case for L-tryptophan, and moreover, most L-tryptophan is used for the production of proteins and other substances, leaving little for the production of serotonin and melatonin. Due to these advantages, 5-HTP is generally more effective, and lower dosages are needed to achieve results.
How much 5-HTP can you take per day?
The daily amount can vary depending on, for example, gender, age, and weight. The standard dosage is between 50 and 300 milligrams per day. Mattisson's 5-HTP comes in capsule form.

30% standardized Griffonia simplicifolia extract, HPMC vegetarian capsule (shell).
Usage
Take 1-2 capsules once daily with water, preferably before bedtime. Do not use in combination with medications that affect brain metabolism, such as antidepressants and sedatives. Not suitable during pregnancy (or desire to conceive) and/or breastfeeding. Not suitable for children up to and including 17 years of age. Consult an expert before use in case of illness or medication use.
