What is lactoferrin?
Lactoferrin is an iron-binding protein naturally present in the body, found in mucous membranes, airways, and the gastrointestinal tract, among other places. The word 'lacto' refers to its richest source: milk. 'Ferrin' refers to lactoferrin's important ability to bind to iron.
As humans, we receive large amounts of lactoferrin shortly after birth via colostrum, the first breast milk. Later breast milk also still contains a great deal of lactoferrin compared to the amount we get from dairy. Our body can also produce lactoferrin itself. We can stimulate this production by exercising on an empty stomach, preferably through strength training with the arms.
