Mattisson Lactase Optiferm 3000FCCWhat is Opti-lactase?
Opti-lactase is a lactase enzyme produced by fermentation of a selected strain of Aspergillus oryzae (a fungus). The fermentation ensures that the product remains stable within a broad pH range. This is beneficial because it means it is not affected by digestive juices in the gastrointestinal tract, and the lactase can be fully utilized for lactose digestion.
Lactase (or ß-D-galactosidase), normally produced by the small intestine wall, hydrolyzes ('breaks down') lactose into its constituent monosaccharides, glucose and galactose. After this, the body can digest these two monosaccharides more easily. Lactase therefore aids in the digestion of lactose.
What is lactose?
Lactose is a milk sugar found in all dairy products produced from milk. Some people cannot properly break down lactose due to a lactase deficiency, leading to unpleasant symptoms such as diarrhea, flatulence, and bloating.
What does 3000 FCC stand for?
3000 FCC (Food Chemical Codex) in a lactase supplement refers to the amount of lactase enzymes present in the supplement and is a measure of enzyme activity. It means that the supplement is capable of digesting an amount of lactose equivalent to 3000 units of the FCC standard. 3000 FCC is a relatively low dosage and can therefore be used by adults and children. You use the number of capsules you need to digest a certain amount of lactose. This can vary per person, and it is best to test for yourself at what amount no symptoms arise after eating a food product containing lactose.
