Omega-3 fatty acids play a unique role in supporting the heart and blood vessels. The fatty acids in the omega-3 family are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA are known to have the most health benefits.
EPA is also important for maintaining healthy cells, for supple joints and to support the immune system. DHA plays an important role in the development and functioning of the brain and nervous system.
EPA and DHA are found almost exclusively in oily fish and are therefore also known as fish fatty acids. ALA, which can be found in vegetable oil, can be converted into EPA and DHA to a limited extent.
