Nutmeg is native to the tropical rainforest on the Moluccas and the Banda Islands. Today, it is an important crop in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies. The tree grows up to 15 meters tall and has elongated, smooth leaves. Pale yellow flowers are followed by yellow pear-shaped fruit. When this fruit is ripe, it bursts open, releasing the seed (nutmeg). The nutmeg is enclosed in a bright red aril (mace). This seed and aril are rich in essential oil, which, however, differ in concentration and aroma. In Indonesia, nutmeg is still processed into an oil as a means to warm the body.
The color of nutmeg oil is colorless to pale yellow. The scent is spicy and is also widely used in men's perfumes.
