The baobab or monkey bread tree is one of the most famous and characteristic trees in Africa. It is the thickest tree in the world (with a circumference of more than 10 meters) and the tree can sometimes be wider than it is tall. The beautiful creamy white flowers, which only open at night, are large and hang individually from a flower stalk; they are adapted for pollination by nectar-drinking bats. After flowering, the oval fruits appear with sour, edible fruit pulp and many seeds. These fruits are very nutritious and are packed with vitamin C, antioxidants, and minerals.
