It is an evergreen tree, sometimes up to 8 m. high, with thick branches from the ground. The fragrant resin pearls from the bark after it has been damaged to protect itself. African or Arabian frankincense is derived from Boswellia carterii. Frankincense essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the tree's resin. It has a light yellow or greenish color and a spicy, resinous scent.

Frankincense rejuvenates the skin and works very well against wrinkles. When applied physically, frankincense oil has the following properties: purifying, astringent, skin-restoring, soothing, calming. Frankincense has a calming and reassuring effect, reduces tension and stress, and improves mood. This oil is ideal for diffusing before meditating.
