We do a lot of DIY in the house, in the garden, on the boat, or as a self-employed person, for example, in construction. Of course, we do this safely with personal protective equipment such as work gloves, sturdy shoes, and safety glasses. It is even safer to also use earplugs. Drilling a hole in a wall can easily produce 110 decibels of sound. With such a loud sound, you risk permanent hearing damage after just five minutes.

In the Netherlands, we have a series of laws to prevent employees from suffering hearing damage. For example, machines may not produce more than 80 decibels of sound. And as an employer, you are obliged to provide hearing protection if your employees are exposed to 80 decibels or more.
