We do a lot of DIY around the house, in the garden, on the boat, or as freelancers in construction, for example. Of course, we do this safely with personal protective equipment like work gloves, sturdy shoes, and safety glasses. It's even safer to use earplugs. Drilling a hole in a wall easily produces 110 decibels of noise. With such loud noise, you risk permanent hearing damage after just five minutes.
In the Netherlands, we have a series of laws to prevent employees from suffering hearing damage. For example, machines may not produce more than 80 decibels of noise. And as an employer, you are required to provide hearing protection if your employees are exposed to 80 decibels or more.
Prevent hearing damage, use protection!
Of course, those rules don't apply to DIY projects. But it's highly recommended to wear good hearing protection even then. Permanent hearing damage doesn't happen overnight; it happens gradually. Before you know it, you'll be struggling to follow conversations, or you'll unconsciously turn up the volume on the television.
